Family Engagement

AIE offers customized family engagement services to meet individual school, district, family and community needs/desires.  The program delivery is designed to increase the number of parents, caretakers, and other family members who are more engaged in everyday student life.

Within this service, AIE staff coaches the school staff in mobilizing parents in meaningful ways, teaches them how to engage families in the school community, and shows them how the work can be sustained.

How it works: Most family engagement programs in Louisiana are not statewide. Those that are statewide provide educator and parent focus groups and/or workshops based on regional studies, rather than customized training and individual school program design.

SAFE Overview

This design is customizable depending on the needs/desires of the school, district, families, and community stakeholders.

  1. AIE works with school, district, and community to select representatives committed to participate on a year-long advisory committee comprised of:
    • One community member/ activist
    • One parent
    • One student
    • One teacher or other school staff member
  2. A survey is administered to all parents at the beginning of the program to determine needs/desires for a family engagement program (i.e. GED training, Literacy, Nutritional literacy, Parenting help, etc).
  3. Family/school gatherings happen once a month (or as desired/needed) for the nine month school year.  Family members are given take-home educational instruction items (i.e., a book, educational board games, at-home educational activities pamphlet, etc.)
  4. The general participation goal for schools with limited parent involvement is 30-50 parents/family members involved by the end of the first year.
  5. Focus and collaborate with stakeholders on how the community can get involved with the school (i.e., community guest speakers at monthly meetings, community offerings that parents vote on, etc.)
  6. Cost of Services: Approx. $25,000/district

This design is customizable depending on the needs/desires of the school, district, families, and community stakeholders.
